Raleigh is a city that takes pride in its teams, its businesses, and its community — and nothing shows that off quite like custom embroidery. Whether you're outfitting a corporate team, stitching up hats for a local sports league, or adding a professional logo to staff polos, embroidery delivers a finished look that lasts.
At Oak City Tees, we work with businesses, organizations, and creators across the Triangle every day. Here's everything you need to know before placing your first embroidery order.
What Is Custom Embroidery?
Embroidery is the process of stitching a design directly into fabric using thread. Unlike a printed transfer that sits on top of the material, embroidery is woven into the garment — which is why it looks so sharp on structured items like hats, jackets, and polos.
The design starts as a digital file that gets converted into a stitch file (called digitizing). A commercial embroidery machine then reads that file and recreates the design in thread, stitch by stitch.
What Works Best for Embroidery?
Embroidery shines on:
- Structured hats and caps — the most popular embroidery item by far
- Polo shirts and button-downs — ideal for corporate and hospitality staff uniforms
- Jackets and outerwear — left-chest or sleeve logos look premium on heavier materials
- Bags and totes — canvas and nylon hold embroidery beautifully
- Patches — standalone embroidered patches that can be sewn or ironed on
It's not the best fit for photorealistic images or designs with very fine detail and gradients — that's where DTF transfers take over.
Embroidery vs. DTF Transfers: Which Should You Choose?
This is the question we get most often, so here's the short answer:
| Embroidery | DTF Transfer | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Hats, polos, jackets | T-shirts, hoodies, any flat fabric |
| Detail level | Bold, clean logos | Photographic, full-color |
| Feel | Raised, textured thread | Soft, flat print |
| Durability | Excellent — outlasts the garment | Excellent with proper care |
| Setup cost | One-time digitizing fee | No setup fee |
| Min. quantity | Usually 6–12 pieces | As low as 1 |
Many Raleigh businesses use both — embroidery for hats and staff polos, and DTF transfers for event tees and promotional shirts.
How to Prepare Your Artwork for Embroidery
The cleaner your logo, the better your embroidery will look. Here are a few tips:
- Vector files are best (AI, EPS, SVG) — they scale without losing quality
- Limit your colors — embroidery thread colors are matched to your design; fewer colors = cleaner result
- Avoid very thin lines or tiny text — anything under about 4mm tall can be difficult to stitch accurately
- High-res PNG works too — our digitizing team can work from a good PNG if you don't have a vector
Need DTF Transfers to Go With Your Embroidered Gear?
A lot of our Raleigh customers outfit their team or staff with both embroidered hats and printed shirts. We make it easy to handle both in one place.
For your printed apparel, check out these options:
- Upload Your Gang Sheet — already have your artwork arranged? Upload it and we'll print it.
- Build Your Own Gang Sheet — mix multiple designs on one sheet to get the most out of every print.
- Custom Transfer By Size — order individual transfers cut to exact dimensions for left-chest logos, back prints, and more.
